What this covers

Walls, ceilings, trim and doors

  • Walls and ceilings

One room or the whole floor, with ceilings done first.

  • Trim and doors

Baseboards, casings and doors, scraped and primed where needed.

  • Stairwells and halls

Banisters and stairs covered, and the high walls reached safely.

  • Kitchens and baths

Walls and ceilings around cabinets and fixtures, which stay covered.

Before the paint

What I do before any paint goes on

This is what's written on the estimate as prep.

  • Cover floors, stairs and furniture

    • Furniture moves to the middle of the room and is wrapped

    • Floors get drop cloths taped at the edge

  • Look for the cause of stains

    • Ceiling stains are traced before they are painted over

    • Windows and corners are checked for moisture

  • Patch, caulk and prime

    • Small holes and cracks are filled and smoothed

    • Gaps at trim are caulked

    • Bare or patched spots get primer

  • Protect what stays on the wall

    • Outlet covers and hardware come off or are taped

    • Windows are masked at the glass

How it goes

A typical room, day by day

Most single rooms take two to three days. A whole floor takes longer, and I write the range on your estimate.

  1. 01

Step 1: Day one: cover, patch and prime

Furniture wrapped, repairs made, primer where it's needed.

  2. 02

Step 2: Day two: first coat

Ceiling, then walls, cut in by hand at the edges.

  3. 03

Step 3: Day three: second coat and trim

Trim and doors, then a walk-through with you before we pack up.

Questions about this work

What's on a written estimate?

Every surface and room, the repairs I'll make, how many coats, which paint and sheen, how many colors, cleanup, the schedule, how payments work and what the warranty covers. Anything I leave out, I say I'm leaving out.

Do I need to move furniture or stay home?

You don't need to be home all day. I'll tell you what to clear before we start. We move the rest to the middle of the room and cover it. Floors, stairs and plants outside are covered too.

How many coats, and what sheen?

Two coats over a primed surface is my starting point, and more where the old color is much darker or the wall is patched. We choose sheen by room: flatter for ceilings, a little more for trim and kitchens. It's written on the estimate.

Can you help me choose colors?

Yes. I bring chips to the visit and we look at them in the room's own light. If you want a color consultant, I'll tell you plainly when that's worth paying for.

Ready for the first visit?

Text me a photo of the room, or call, and we'll find a time.
